How to Summarize a Web Page on iPhone (Safari, AI and More)

On a recent iPhone with Apple Intelligence, you can summarize a web page right in Safari: open the page, tap the Page Menu button in the address bar, then tap Summarize. If your iPhone doesn't support Apple Intelligence, or the option just isn't there, you still have good options.

This guide covers the built-in Safari summary, why it sometimes doesn't show up, how to use ChatGPT and other AI apps from the share sheet, and how to get summaries with sources on any iPhone running iOS 17 or later.

How to summarize a web page in Safari with Apple Intelligence

If your iPhone supports Apple Intelligence and it's turned on, this is the quickest free option:

  1. Open the article or page in Safari.
  2. Tap the Page Menu button in the address bar.
  3. Tap Summarize. Safari shows a short summary of the page.

You can also summarize just part of a page: select the text, tap Writing Tools in the menu that appears, then tap Summary or Key Points. This is handy when a page mixes several topics and you only care about one section.

Apple's steps are in its guide to browsing the web using Safari on iPhone.

Which iPhones can summarize in Safari?

Safari summaries need Apple Intelligence, which runs on the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 models or later, including iPhone Air. Older models, such as the iPhone 15, iPhone 14 and earlier, and iPhone SE, can't use it, even on the latest iOS.

A supported iPhone also needs:

  • Apple Intelligence turned on: go to Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri.
  • A supported language: your iPhone language and Siri language must be set to the same supported language. English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Chinese and several others are supported.
  • Free storage: Apple Intelligence downloads its models to your iPhone and needs several gigabytes of space.
  • A supported region: features vary by country, and Apple Intelligence isn't currently available on devices bought in mainland China.

Apple keeps the current list on its Apple Intelligence requirements page.

Summarize not showing in Safari? Try this

If you have a supported iPhone but don't see Summarize, work through these checks:

  1. Make sure Apple Intelligence is on and finished setting up. Right after you turn it on or update iOS, models download in the background. Summaries can say they're unavailable until that's done. Keep the iPhone on Wi-Fi and charging for a while.
  2. Match your languages. If your iPhone language and Siri language differ, Apple Intelligence can switch off until they match.
  3. Free up storage. If space is low, the models may not download.
  4. Try a different page. Summarize works best on articles. Home pages, search results, shops, forums and very short pages may not offer it, or Safari may say it can't summarize that content.
  5. Update iOS. Go to Settings → General → Software Update.

If none of that works, your iPhone model or region is the likely cause. The options below work regardless.

Summarize a web page with ChatGPT or another AI app

AI chat apps such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude can summarize a page on any iPhone. There are two ways to send them a page:

  • Share sheet: in Safari, tap the Share button, then pick the AI app if it appears in the row of apps. Tap More if you don't see it. Then ask for a summary.
  • Copy and paste: copy the page's link, or select and copy the text, then paste it into the app and ask for a summary.

This works well, with a few things to know:

  • Links aren't always readable. When you share a link, the AI app usually fetches the page itself. Pages behind a login or paywall, or sites that block bots, may fail or give a summary of the wrong content. Pasting the text avoids this.
  • You switch apps. You leave the page, then come back to keep reading.
  • Check for sources. Ask the app to quote the parts of the page it used, so you can tell what came from the article and what didn't.
  • Privacy: what you paste is sent to that AI service. Check its privacy settings before pasting anything personal.

Summarize pages in your browser, with sources

If you summarize pages often, a browser with AI built in saves the app switching. Kipzy is a free iPhone browser with an AI assistant, Kipzy AI, that reads the page you're on. It works on any iPhone with iOS 17 or later, so it's a good fit if your iPhone can't run Apple Intelligence.

  • Key points with sources: get a summary where each point has a numbered source, so you can jump to the part of the page it came from.
  • Ask the page: ask a question, like "What's the price?" or "What did the study find?", and get an answer from the page with citations.
  • Fact check: see a verdict and a source for each claim on the page.
  • Explain simply and Translate: get a plain-language version, or have the page explained in your language.

Kipzy AI uses Anthropic's Claude and only runs when you tap an AI action. The server doesn't save the pages, questions or answers. It's unlimited with Kipzy Pro monthly ($4.99) or yearly ($29.99, with a 7-day free trial). The Lifetime plan doesn't include Kipzy AI. See how Kipzy AI works.

The rest of the browser is free, including ad and pop-up blocking, which also makes long articles easier to read. Read more in how to block ads on iPhone.

No AI? Use Reader to make a page easier to skim

Reader isn't a summary, but it strips a page down to the text and images, which makes long articles faster to get through on any iPhone. In Safari, tap the Page Menu button, then tap Show Reader. Skim the headings and first sentence of each paragraph, which is where most articles put their main points.

Which option should you use?

  • You have an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16 or newer: start with Safari's free Summarize.
  • You need a one-off summary on an older iPhone: share or paste the page into an AI app you already use.
  • You want summaries with sources, questions about the page and fact checks without switching apps: try Kipzy AI.

FAQ

Is Safari's Summarize free?

Yes. It's part of Apple Intelligence, which comes with iOS on supported iPhones at no extra cost.

Can I summarize a web page on iPhone 14 or iPhone 15?

Not with Safari's Summarize, since those models don't support Apple Intelligence. Use an AI app through the share sheet, or a browser with built-in AI such as Kipzy.

Are AI summaries accurate?

Usually close, but they can leave out important details or get things wrong. For anything that matters, use a tool that shows where each point came from and check the original text.

Can I turn off summaries in Safari?

To turn off Apple Intelligence features, including Safari summaries, go to Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri and turn off Apple Intelligence. This also turns off other features such as Writing Tools and notification summaries.
